Here Comes Trouble! A look at the Effects of Climate Change on Horticulture

The northeast is experiencing noticeable changes in the weather and climate. Don Gabel, horticulturist and plant health care expert will explore the changes and the effects on growing plants. Aspects like plant hardiness, moisture levels, insects and disease, vernalization will be reviewed. This lecture is designed to introduce people to the coming changes in horticulture and arboriculture, and make recommendations on coping with this new and ever evolving climate.
DON GABEL has been involved in the green industry for over 50 years, having owned and operated a small consulting business in his early years to serving as the Director of Plant Health at the New York Botanical Garden for 18 years. He continues to teach insects and disease courses at NYBG, as he has been doing for the past 32 years. Currently he is a consulting arborist advancing research on diseases link Beech Leaf Disease that is impacting northeastern forests. Among his many credentials, he is an ISA Certified Arborist and a member of the N.Y. State Nursery and Landscape Association. Don still enjoys skiing, hiking, 4 grandchildren and an occasional really hard plant health diagnosis.
